HSK Requirements for Chinese Universities: What Level Do International Students Need?

Updated October 2026 · 7 min read · StudyinGBA

If you want to enroll in a Chinese-taught degree program in China, the HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi, 汉语水平考试) is the gate you must pass. But the requirements differ more between universities than most applicants expect — from HSK 3 foundation pathways at some colleges to HSK 5 (180+) at top national universities.

This guide breaks down exactly what HSK level each type of program requires, using the current published requirements of universities in the Greater Bay Area, and shows you every alternative if your Chinese isn't there yet.

The rule of thumb: HSK 4 (180+) for most bachelor's programs, HSK 5 (180+) for master's and PhD programs at leading universities — and a surprising number of ways to bypass or substitute these requirements.

How the HSK Works

The HSK is China's official standardized Chinese proficiency test, with six levels:

  • HSK 1–2: beginner; ~150–300 words. Enough for short language courses, not degrees.
  • HSK 3: ~600 words. The entry point for some foundation programs and vocational diplomas.
  • HSK 4: ~1,200 words. The standard threshold for bachelor's degree admission.
  • HSK 5: ~2,500 words. Required for graduate study at selective universities.
  • HSK 6: ~5,000+ words. Rarely formally required, but expected for Chinese-medium humanities programs.

Each level is scored out of 300, and most universities specify a minimum of 180 per level — so "HSK 4" usually means HSK 4 with a score of 180 or above.

Bachelor's Programs: HSK 4 (180+) Is the Standard

The overwhelming majority of Chinese-taught bachelor's programs in the Greater Bay Area require HSK 4 with 180+ points. Verified examples include:

UniversityProgramTuition / YearHSK Requirement
Huizhou UniversityElectronics / Chinese Language (Bachelor)¥5,710 / ¥5,050HSK 4 ≥ 180
Foshan UniversityEngineering / Materials Science (Bachelor)¥5,710HSK 4 ≥ 180
Guangdong Pharmaceutical UniversityPharmacy (Bachelor)¥6,230HSK 4 ≥ 180
Guangzhou University of Chinese MedicineChinese Medicine (Bachelor)¥20,000 (Chinese) / ¥25,000 (English)HSK 4 ≥ 180
Guangdong University of TechnologyEngineering / CS (Bachelor)¥18,000–21,000HSK 4 ≥ 180
Dongguan University of TechnologyEngineering / CS / Business (Bachelor)¥16,000–21,000HSK 4 ≥ 180
Zhongkai University of Agriculture and EngineeringAgriculture / Food Science (Bachelor)¥14,000HSK 4 ≥ 180
Wuyi UniversityEngineering / Economics (Bachelor)¥15,000HSK 4 ≥ 180

When the bar moves higher: HSK 4–5 and HSK 5

Selective universities raise the requirement:

  • South China University of Technology (SCUT): Chinese-taught bachelor's programs require HSK 4–5 (180+); tuition from ¥18,200/year.
  • Shenzhen University: Chinese-taught bachelor's programs require HSK 4–5 (180+); CS specifies HSK 4 or passing the school's own Chinese test.
  • Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU): all Chinese-taught undergraduate programs require HSK 5 (180+) — the strictest in the region. Chinese-taught bachelor's tuition runs ¥26,000–48,000/year.
  • Jinan University: Chinese-taught programs require HSK 5 (180+) across the board.

Master's and PhD Programs: HSK 5 (180+)

For graduate study in Chinese, expect HSK 5:

  • South China Normal University (SCNU): master's and PhD programs (e.g., International Chinese Language Education Master ¥29,000/year; Science & Engineering PhD ¥40,000/year) require HSK 5 ≥ 180; bachelor's programs need HSK 4.
  • SYSU: Chinese-taught master's (from ¥30,000/year) and PhD (from ¥33,000/year) programs require HSK 5 ≥ 180.
  • Shenzhen University: Chinese-taught master's and PhD programs require HSK 4–5 (180+).

The Low-HSK Pathways: HSK 3 and Below

Not at HSK 4 yet? Three doors remain open:

  1. Foundation / pre-university programs. Jinan University's Pre-University Programs A and B (¥19,000/year) accept students with just HSK 3 and prepare you for bachelor's entry. SCUT's International Foundation Program costs ¥18,000 (English track) or ¥23,000 (Chinese track).
  2. Vocational diplomas with HSK 3. Guangdong Mechanical and Electrical Vocational Technical College accepts HSK 3+ for its Electronic Information Engineering Technology (¥12,000/year) and Sino-Russian Software Technology (¥16,000/year) diplomas, ages 16–45.
  3. "HSK 4 or internal test" policies. Several universities let you substitute the official HSK with their own exam — including SCUT Civil Engineering, Shenzhen University CS, Jiangmen Polytechnic, and Guangdong Polytechnic Institute ("HSK 4 or pass the school's Chinese test"). Guangdong Food and Drug Vocational College similarly combines HSK 4 with a Chinese interview.

Watch the level logic: many programs require a lower HSK to enter a language or foundation year, then expect HSK 4 before you begin the degree itself. Always check whether the requirement is for direct degree entry or for the pathway.

No HSK at All? Choose English-Taught Programs

If your Chinese is zero and your timeline is short, English-taught programs replace the HSK requirement with IELTS/TOEFL:

  • Jinan University English bachelor's (e.g., International Economics & Trade ¥28,000/year, Clinical Medicine ¥34,000/year): IELTS 5.5 / TOEFL 80 / SAT 1030.
  • Guangzhou Medical University English-taught Clinical Medicine (¥40,000/year, 6 years): IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL 80.
  • SUSTech English-taught bachelor's and graduate programs (¥10,000–30,000/year): English proficiency tests, no HSK.
  • Shenzhen University English-taught programs (from ¥26,000/year): IELTS 5.5 / TOEFL 80 / Duolingo 100.
  • Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine English-taught Chinese Medicine (¥25,000/year): IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL 80.

How to Plan Your HSK Timeline

  1. 12–18 months before enrollment: start structured Chinese study; aim to reach HSK 3 first.
  2. 10–12 months out: sit HSK 3 or 4. Consider a one-year language program in China (e.g., from ¥7,000–8,000/year at Shenzhen Polytechnic University or Guangzhou Huashang College) — see language programs with visa support.
  3. 6–9 months out: pass HSK 4 (180+) before application deadlines, which in the GBA cluster between April 30 and June 30 for mainland universities, with some July–August windows for vocational colleges.
  4. Apply, then bridge the gap: if you have HSK 3, target foundation programs (JNU ¥19,000, SCUT ¥18,000–23,000) that convert into degree admission.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is HSK 4 enough for a bachelor's degree in China?

For most universities, yes — HSK 4 with 180+ points is the standard published requirement for Chinese-taught bachelor's admission. Only top national universities (SYSU, JNU) require HSK 5 at the bachelor's level.

Can I study in China with HSK 3?

Yes, via foundation programs (Jinan University Pre-University at ¥19,000/year) or selected vocational diplomas (Guangdong Mechanical & Electrical College at HSK 3+).

Do I need HSK for English-taught programs?

No. English-taught programs at JNU, GMU, SUSTech, and others require IELTS/TOEFL instead — though learning Chinese remains essential for daily life and job hunting.

What score do I need within a level?

Almost every university specifies 180/300 or above at the required level, so aim comfortably above the 180 cutoff.
