China Student Visa Guide
Everything you need to know about X1 and X2 visas β simplified for international students.
Which visa do you need?
It depends on how long your program lasts. Simple.
Long-term Study
Program duration: 6 months or longer
- For degree programs (Bachelor, Master, PhD)
- Valid for multiple entries
- Must convert to Residence Permit within 30 days of arrival
- Residence permit allows unlimited entry/exit during validity
- Can apply for part-time work/internship with permit
Short-term Study
Program duration: less than 6 months
- For language courses, summer programs, exchange semesters
- Usually single or double entry
- No need to convert to Residence Permit
- Cannot be extended beyond original duration
- Simpler application process than X1
How to Apply
Get your admission letter & JW202 form
After you are accepted by a GBA university, they will issue your Admission Notice and JW201/JW202 form (Visa Application for Study in China). StudyinGBA helps coordinate this with the university.
Complete the online visa application
Fill out the COVA form (China Online Visa Application) on the official website. Select "X1" or "X2" as your visa category.
Book an appointment at the Chinese embassy/consulate
Submit your application in person at the nearest Chinese embassy or visa center in your country. Bring all required documents (see checklist below).
Pay the visa fee & collect your visa
Visa fees vary by country (typically $30β$150 USD). Processing takes 4β10 working days. Once approved, your visa will be stamped in your passport.
X1 only: Convert to Residence Permit after arrival
Within 30 days of entering China, visit the local Public Security Bureau (PSB) Exit-Entry Administration to apply for your Residence Permit. This replaces your X1 visa.

Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay, with blank visa pages
Completed and signed online application with photo
Original and copy from your GBA university
Visa Application for Study in China β issued by the university
Recent color photo (48mm Γ 33mm), white background
Required for X1 visa applicants (Foreigner Physical Examination Form)
Bank statements or scholarship letter showing sufficient funds
Notarized guardian authorization if under 18
Important Tips
- Apply at least 4β6 weeks before your program starts β processing can be slow during peak seasons
- X1 holders must register at the local police station within 24 hours of arrival (your university usually helps with this)
- Never overstay your visa β penalties include fines, detention, and future entry bans
- Keep copies of all documents β both physical and digital
- Visa requirements can vary slightly by country β always check with your local Chinese embassy
