Public Health & Clinical Medicine Career in China for International Students

Updated September 2026 · 8 min read · StudyinGBA

For international students aiming at a medical or healthcare career, China's Greater Bay Area is one of the strongest and most affordable regions in Asia to study. Guangzhou Medical University (GMU), Jinan University (JNU) and Shantou University (STU) all run English-taught Clinical Medicine (MBBS) bachelor's programs that are recognized internationally. The same region has a strong healthcare-services economy — hospital groups, biotech firms, pharmaceutical companies, public-health agencies and an ageing-population-driven demand for clinicians, dentists, nurses, pharmacists and epidemiologists.

This guide walks through the verified MBBS and adjacent medical programs available to international applicants in 2026, the language and entrance requirements, and the career pathways open to graduates in public health, hospital medicine and related fields.

Why the GBA for medicine? Guangzhou is the medical capital of South China with the highest concentration of tertiary hospitals, GMU is recognised for Stomatology, Nursing and Public Health in addition to Clinical Medicine, and Shantou University's Medical College is registered in the FAIMER/IMED directory — making its English-taught MBBS widely accepted worldwide.

1. Clinical Medicine (Bachelor, English-taught, 6 years) — Guangzhou Medical University

Tuition: ¥40,000 / year (~US$5,500) | Duration: 6 years | Language: English | English requirement: IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL 80 | Application deadline: June 30, 2026

GMU's English-taught MBBS is the flagship medical program in the GBA. GMU's strengths span Clinical Medicine, Stomatology, Nursing and Public Health, so students benefit from teaching faculty who also work across the broader healthcare spectrum. The 6-year track follows the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) guidelines and is registered with WHO/FAIMER, allowing graduates to apply for medical licensing exams in most countries. Visit the Guangzhou Medical University page.

2. Clinical Medicine (Bachelor, Chinese-taught, 5 years) — Guangzhou Medical University

Tuition: ¥40,000 / year | Duration: 5 years | Language: Chinese | Chinese requirement: HSK 4 ≥ 180 | Application deadline: June 30, 2026

For international students who already speak Chinese at HSK 4 or above, GMU's 5-year Chinese-taught MBBS is shorter than the English-taught 6-year track and includes a deeper clinical rotation with Chinese-speaking patients. This is a great option for students planning to practise medicine in Mainland China after graduation. See the GMU page.

3. Clinical Medicine (Bachelor, English-taught, 5-year) — Shantou University

Tuition: ¥40,000 / year | Duration: 5 years | Language: English | English requirement: TOEFL 80 / IELTS 6.0 (or medium-of-instruction certificate) | Application deadline: June 1, 2027

Shantou University Medical College runs an English-taught MBBS that is registered in the FAIMER/IMED directory — important for graduates planning to apply for USMLE, PLAB or other medical licensing exams abroad. STU was founded with Li Ka Shing Foundation support and operates a small-cohort, high-touch teaching model. More on the Shantou University page.

4. Clinical Medicine (Bachelor, English-taught, 6-year track) — Shantou University

Tuition: ¥40,000 / year | Duration: 6 years | Language: English | English requirement: TOEFL 80 / IELTS 6.0 | Application deadline: June 1, 2027

The 6-year English-taught MBBS at STU adds a research-thesis year to the standard clinical rotation. International graduates benefit from Shantou's smaller cohort size and dedicated English-language academic support. Found at the Shantou University page.

5. Clinical Medicine (Bachelor, English-taught, 6 years) — Jinan University

Tuition: ¥34,000 / year (~US$4,700) | Duration: 6 years | Language: English | English requirement: IELTS 5.5 (5.0+) / TOEFL 80 / SAT 1030+ | Application deadline: May 31, 2027 (Phase 2)

JNU's English-taught MBBS is the most affordable option in the GBA at ¥34K/year — about 50% the cost of studying medicine in Singapore and less than 1/10 the cost of a US medical school. JNU is widely known as the "university of overseas Chinese" and has one of the largest international student populations in China, making it a particularly friendly choice for first-time international applicants. Visit the Jinan University page.

6. Clinical Medicine (Bachelor, Chinese, 5 years) — Jinan University

Tuition: ¥34,000 / year | Duration: 5 years | Language: Chinese | Chinese requirement: HSK 5 ≥ 180 | Application deadline: May 31, 2027 (Phase 2)

JNU's Chinese-taught MBBS is one year shorter than the English track and is for students who have already reached HSK 5. The teaching language also allows deeper exposure to the Chinese healthcare system, which is a meaningful long-term advantage for graduates who plan to apply for residency or licensure in Mainland China. See the JNU page.

7. Clinical Medicine (Bachelor, Chinese, 5 years) — Shantou University

Tuition: ¥30,000 / year | Duration: 5 years | Language: Chinese | Application deadline: June 1, 2027

STU's Chinese-taught MBBS is one of the lowest-cost English-recognized MBBS programs in Asia. Students with HSK 4–5 qualifications can complete their medical degree at a fraction of the cost of studying in Hong Kong or Singapore. Visit the STU page for the most recent admission rules.

8. Clinical Medicine (Bachelor, Chinese, 5 years) — Guangdong Pharmaceutical University

Tuition: ¥7,656 / year (~US$1,050) | Duration: 5 years | Language: Chinese | Chinese requirement: HSK 4 ≥ 180 | Application deadline: June 30, 2026

GDPU offers an extremely low-cost Chinese-taught Clinical Medicine option. Although it is not widely marketed to international students, GDPU is a recognized medical university with strong pharmacy and clinical teaching. It is best suited to students whose priority is affordability and who already hold HSK 4 or above. Browse all medical programs on our programs directory.

Eligibility tip: International applicants to English-taught MBBS in China typically need a high-school diploma with strong Biology and Chemistry grades; some schools (e.g. JNU) also accept an SAT 1030+ as an entrance alternative. For a deeper guide to MBBS eligibility and licensing considerations, see our MBBS eligibility guide.

Where Public Health Comes In

While dedicated MPH (Master of Public Health) programs in the GBA tend to be Chinese-taught or joint with clinical degrees, several pathways lead international students into public health careers:

  • Hospital Medicine → Public Health: Doctors from GMU, STU, and JNU often work in hospital-based epidemiology, infection control, or community medicine after 3–5 years of practice.
  • Pharmaceutical → Regulatory & Public Health: GDPU graduates often work for the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) or for international pharma companies on regulatory affairs in China.
  • Nursing → Public Health Nurse: Shantou University's Nursing and Guangdong Polytechnic Institute's Nursing diploma graduate into public-health nursing roles.
  • Research → Government & NGO: STU and JNU MBBS graduates frequently go into global-health research, especially those who complete a PhD at SUSTech or SCUT.

Application Timeline and Visa

All English-taught MBBS programs in the GBA have a single annual intake in September, with application closing dates between late May and late June. Required documents typically include:

  • High-school diploma with Biology and Chemistry transcripts
  • IELTS / TOEFL / SAT score (English track) or HSK certificate (Chinese track)
  • Passport copy, physical examination form and a clean criminal record
  • Application form, study plan and two recommendation letters

Successful applicants are issued an X1 student visa, which is the standard long-term study visa for degree programs longer than 6 months — see our visa guide and the X1 vs X2 comparison for details.

Fees Beyond Tuition

In addition to tuition, MBBS students should budget for:

  • On-campus dormitory: ¥6,000–¥12,000 / year depending on room type and city
  • Health insurance (mandatory): typically ¥800 / year
  • Living expenses: ¥1,800–¥3,000 / month in Guangzhou, ¥2,200–¥3,500 / month in Shenzhen
  • Medical textbooks and clinical supplies: ¥2,000–¥4,000 / year

For a complete picture of cost across the region, see our cost of living in Shenzhen guide and the broader living in Guangzhou guide.
