Study in China for Cambodian Students 2026: MBBS, Scholarships & Visa Guide

October 2026 · 9 min read · StudyinGBA

Cambodian students are one of the fastest-growing groups in Chinese universities, supported by strong bilateral ties, direct Phnom Penh–Guangzhou flights, and generous scholarship quotas. For 2027 applicants, China's Greater Bay Area (GBA) offers English-taught MBBS, business, and engineering degrees at costs far below Western destinations. Here is everything Cambodian students need to know.

Budget snapshot: Chinese-taught degrees in Guangdong start around ¥5,050–5,710 per year; English-taught degrees run ¥26,000–34,000 per year. Add a CSC or Guangdong Government scholarship and studying in China can cost less than a private degree in Phnom Penh.

2. MBBS in China for Cambodian Students

Medicine is the top choice for Cambodian applicants. These English-taught clinical medicine programs accept international students:

Admission essentials:

  • Jinan University (Guangzhou) — 6-year English MBBS track, IELTS 5.5 (5.0+) accepted, application fee ¥800, Phase 2 deadline May 31, 2027.
  • Guangzhou Medical University — 6-year English track, IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL 80, application fee ¥500, deadline June 30, 2026 for the current cycle.
  • Shantou University — 5-year and 6-year English tracks, TOEFL 80 / IELTS 6.0 or a medium-of-instruction certificate, application fee ¥400, deadline June 1, 2027.

Important: check current recognition rules with the Medical Council of Cambodia before you commit, and keep your curriculum documents — you will need them for licensing and residency applications later.

3. Scholarships for Cambodian Students

  • Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) — Cambodia receives a dedicated annual quota; it covers tuition, accommodation, a monthly stipend, and insurance.
  • Guangdong Government Outstanding International Student Scholarship — ¥10,000/year and up.
  • University scholarships — Shantou University's tiered awards range from half tuition to full tuition plus housing and a ¥15,000/year living allowance; SUSTech full and partial scholarships cut effective tuition to ¥10,000–30,000/year for English-taught science and engineering.
  • Presidential Scholarships at Jinan University and Shenzhen University.

Our CSC scholarship guide explains documents and timelines step by step.

4. Visa Process from Cambodia

  1. Receive your admission letter and JW202 form.
  2. Book an appointment at the Chinese Embassy in Phnom Penh.
  3. Apply for an X1 visa with your passport, admission letter, JW202, health certificate, and photos. Our visa guide lists every document.
  4. Convert the X1 visa into a residence permit within 30 days of arrival in China.

5. Cost of Living and Accommodation

Beyond tuition, plan for these monthly expenses (typical ranges in GBA cities):

  • On-campus dormitory: roughly ¥3,000–8,000 per year depending on the university and room type.
  • Food: ¥1,000–1,500 per month — university canteens are cheapest, and Guangdong's Southeast Asian food scene means familiar flavours are never far away.
  • Transport: ¥100–200 per month; metro networks in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Foshan are extensive, with student discounts.
  • Phone and internet: ¥50–100 per month.

Most international students in Guangdong live comfortably on ¥2,500–4,000 per month excluding tuition — a fraction of living costs in Western study destinations.

6. Application Timeline for the 2027 Intake

  • October 2026 – February 2027: gather documents — transcripts, passport, English test scores (or book IELTS/TOEFL), health check planning. CSC scholarship applications usually close in early spring.
  • March – May 2027: peak application window. Shantou University closes June 1, 2027; Jinan University's Phase 2 closes May 31, 2027.
  • June 2027: final deadline wave for many mainland universities, including Guangzhou Medical University (June 30, 2026 for the current cycle — check the new year's date when it opens).
  • July – August 2027: receive admission letters and JW202 forms, apply for the X1 visa, and prepare for September enrolment.

See our full month-by-month breakdown in the GBA application deadlines guide.

7. Why the Greater Bay Area?

  • Close ties and easy travel — direct flights from Phnom Penh to Guangzhou take about 2.5 hours, and the two economies are deeply linked through trade and investment.
  • Real career value — Chinese-speaking Cambodian graduates are sought after by Chinese companies investing in Cambodian infrastructure, manufacturing, and agriculture.
  • Warm climate and food culture — Guangdong's tropical weather and Southeast Asian food scene make settling in easy.
  • Low living costs — around ¥2,500–4,000 per month in most GBA cities.

For the 2027 intake, most deadlines fall between March and June 2027. One application through StudyinGBA can reach several universities at once — read our application guide to begin.
