Laos and China are more connected than ever. The China–Laos Railway now links Vientiane to Kunming, Chinese investment is reshaping Lao infrastructure and trade, and Lao students already rank among the largest ASEAN groups on Chinese campuses. For Lao students considering the 2027 intake, China's Greater Bay Area (GBA) offers affordable, English-taught degrees and a direct bridge into the Chinese-language job market. This guide covers everything: tuition, MBBS options, scholarships, and visas.
Why it makes financial sense: Chinese-taught bachelor's degrees in Guangdong cost from ¥5,050 per year, and English-taught degrees from ¥26,000 per year — before scholarships. A CSC award can reduce your total cost to nearly zero.

3. Scholarships for Lao Students
- Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) — full tuition, accommodation, monthly stipend, and insurance; Laos receives a dedicated ASEAN quota.
- Guangdong Government Outstanding International Student Scholarship — ¥10,000/year and up.
- University scholarships — Shantou University's tiers range from half tuition to full tuition plus housing and a ¥15,000/year living allowance; SUSTech scholarships reduce effective tuition to ¥10,000–30,000/year for English-taught science and engineering students.
- Presidential Scholarships at Jinan University and Shenzhen University for top applicants.
See our CSC scholarship guide for eligibility and deadlines.
4. Visa Process from Laos
- Receive your admission letter and JW202 form from the university.
- Book an appointment at the Chinese Embassy in Vientiane.
- Apply for an X1 visa (study over 180 days) with your passport, admission letter, JW202, health check, and photos — details in our visa guide.
- Within 30 days of arrival, convert the X1 visa into a residence permit. For the difference between visa types, see our X1 vs X2 guide.
5. Cost of Living and Accommodation
Beyond tuition, budget for these monthly expenses (typical ranges in GBA cities):
- On-campus dormitory: roughly ¥3,000–8,000 per year depending on the university and room type.
- Food: ¥1,000–1,500 per month. University canteens are the cheapest option, and Guangdong's rice-based cuisine will feel familiar to Lao students.
- Transport: ¥100–200 per month. Metro systems in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Foshan are modern and inexpensive.
- Phone and internet: ¥50–100 per month.
In total, most international students live on ¥2,500–4,000 per month excluding tuition — and GBA cities cost noticeably less than Beijing or Shanghai.
6. Direct Entry or a Chinese Language Year First?
Lao applicants generally take one of two routes:
- Direct English-taught entry: apply straight into English-taught bachelor's programs (from ¥26,000/year) or the English MBBS track if you already meet IELTS/TOEFL requirements. Fastest route to a degree.
- Language year first: join a one-year Chinese language program, pass the required HSK level (usually HSK 4), then transfer into a Chinese-taught degree from as low as ¥5,050–5,710/year. Slower, but far cheaper overall and it builds deep Mandarin fluency.
Not sure which suits you? Our pathway guide explains how language students transition into degree programs.
7. Why the Greater Bay Area?
- The railway era — the China–Laos Railway and expanding air links make round trips between Vientiane and southern China faster and cheaper than ever.
- Careers in the BRI economy — Chinese-speaking Lao graduates are in demand for railway logistics, hydropower, agriculture, and trade projects connecting the two economies.
- Language advantage — even in English-taught programs, daily life in Guangdong builds strong Mandarin skills for free.
- Affordable living — expect ¥2,500–4,000 per month for accommodation, food, and transport in most GBA cities.
Most 2027-intake deadlines fall between March and June 2027. Submit early and to multiple universities — our application guide and free evaluation will get you started.
