Every year, thousands of Nepali students look beyond Nepal for affordable, internationally recognised degrees — and China has become one of the top destinations, especially for medicine. But with so many universities and agents promising different things, it is hard to know where the real value is.
This guide focuses on the Greater Bay Area (GBA) — Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and nearby cities in southern China — one of the most dynamic and economically advanced regions in Asia. All tuition figures below come from the universities' official international-student fee schedules.
Why the Greater Bay Area Is a Smart Choice for Nepali Students
- Genuinely affordable tuition. English-taught MBBS starts at ¥34,000 per year (about NPR 650,000) — a fraction of what private medical colleges charge in Nepal or Bangladesh for the same level of clinical exposure.
- English-taught degree programs. You do not need to speak Chinese to enrol: several universities offer full English-medium bachelor's degrees in medicine, business, computer science and more.
- Close to home. Direct flights connect Kathmandu with Guangzhou in under four hours, making the GBA one of the most accessible study destinations for Nepali families.
- Career-relevant location. Guangdong province is China's manufacturing and trade powerhouse, so internships and part-time opportunities are plentiful.
English-Taught MBBS for Nepali Students
Medicine is by far the most popular program among Nepali applicants. Three universities in Guangdong offer English-medium Clinical Medicine (MBBS) degrees:
Jinan University (Guangzhou) — ¥34,000/year
Jinan University (QS #540) is one of China's most experienced universities for international students. Its English-taught Clinical Medicine program runs for 6 years and costs ¥34,000 per year. The English requirement is IELTS 5.5 (5.0+ accepted), TOEFL 80, or SAT 1030. The application fee is ¥800, and the Phase 2 deadline for 2027 intake is May 31, 2027.
Guangzhou Medical University (Guangzhou) — ¥40,000/year
Guangzhou Medical University offers a 6-year English-taught Clinical Medicine degree at ¥40,000 per year, requiring IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80. The application fee is ¥500.
Shantou University (Shantou) — ¥40,000/year
Shantou University, supported by the Li Ka Shing Foundation, offers a 5-year and a 6-year English-taught Clinical Medicine track at ¥40,000 per year. Applicants need IELTS 6.0 (Academic) or TOEFL 80 — or a medium-of-instruction certificate from their previous school. The application fee is just ¥400, with a deadline of June 1, 2027.
Important for future doctors: If you plan to return to Nepal to practise, confirm the current recognition requirements of the Nepal Medical Council (NMC) before applying — including whether you must pass a licensing screening exam after graduation. Choose only universities on recognised lists, and verify status directly with the NMC.
Beyond Medicine: English-Taught Bachelor's Degrees
Not every Nepali student wants to study medicine. The GBA also offers strong English-taught options in business, IT and engineering:
- Jinan University: Computer Science (¥30,000/yr), Accounting with CPA Canada pathway (¥32,000/yr), Finance (¥28,000/yr), International Economics & Trade (¥28,000/yr)
- South China University of Technology (QS #377): English-taught bachelor's programs from ¥26,000/yr (IELTS 5.5 / TOEFL 68), application fee ¥450
- Shenzhen University (QS #452): International Economics & Trade (¥26,000/yr) and International Business Administration (¥30,000/yr) in English
- Guangdong University of Foreign Studies: English-taught Business Administration (¥33,500–33,800/yr)
If you already speak some Chinese or are willing to take a one-year language pathway, Chinese-taught degrees are even cheaper: Guangdong University of Technology charges ¥21,000/yr for engineering and computer science, and Guangzhou University charges ¥18,000–20,000/yr with no application fee.
Scholarships for Nepali Students
Nepali applicants can compete for several scholarship layers:
- CSC (Chinese Government) Scholarships — full or partial funding offered through most GBA universities, including Jinan, SCUT, Shenzhen University and Guangzhou Medical University.
- Guangdong Government Scholarship — a provincial award worth about ¥10,000, available at Jinan University and most other Guangdong institutions.
- University scholarships — including Presidential Scholarships at SYSU, SZU and SCUT, and the Li Ka Shing Foundation-supported awards at Shantou University.

Admission Requirements for Nepali Applicants
- Academic: Completion of +2 (higher secondary) with strong results, especially in Physics, Chemistry and Biology for medicine.
- English: IELTS 5.5–6.0 or TOEFL 80 for most English-taught programs; some universities accept a medium-of-instruction certificate.
- Age and health: Standard requirements for the X1 student visa, including a medical examination.

Cost of Living in the GBA
Budget roughly ¥2,500–4,000 per month for accommodation, food and transport in Guangzhou or Shenzhen; smaller cities like Shantou or Foshan are noticeably cheaper. University dormitories typically range from ¥3,500 to ¥8,000 per year, which keeps living costs far below those of Australia, the UK or even India's private metro colleges.
