Study in China for South African Students: Programs, Tuition & Scholarships (2027 Intake)

Updated September 2026 · 7 min read · StudyinGBA

As two of the leading economies in BRICS, South Africa and China share deep trade, investment, and educational ties — and studying in China has become one of the most affordable ways for South African students to gain an internationally recognized degree. Full bachelor's degrees in China's Greater Bay Area (GBA) start from around ¥18,000–¥40,000 per year (roughly R46,000–R100,000), compared with several times that figure at universities in the US or UK.

This guide sets out the most practical study routes for South African applicants — medicine, engineering, business, and Chinese language — with verified tuition figures, English requirements, and deadlines for the 2027 intake.

Why the GBA? The Greater Bay Area — Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau — is China's export and manufacturing engine. For South African students focused on trade, logistics, engineering, or technology, there is no better place to build a China-relevant career.

English-Taught MBBS: Options and Costs

For South African students considering medicine abroad, three GBA universities offer English-taught Clinical Medicine (MBBS) degrees:

1. Jinan University — Guangzhou

Tuition: ¥34,000/year · Duration: 6 years · English requirement: IELTS 5.5 (5.0+) / TOEFL 80 / SAT 1030 · Deadline: May 31, 2027 (Phase 2) · Application fee: ¥800

Jinan University is China's "university of overseas Chinese" with one of the country's largest international student communities and a long-running English MBBS track. See the Jinan University page.

2. Guangzhou Medical University — Guangzhou

Tuition: ¥40,000/year · Duration: 6 years · English requirement: IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL 80 · Deadline: June 30, 2026 · Application fee: ¥500

A specialist medical university with affiliated hospitals throughout Guangzhou, GMU also offers very low dormitory costs (about ¥1,500/year). Visit the Guangzhou Medical University page.

3. Shantou University — Shantou

Tuition: ¥40,000/year · Duration: 5 or 6 years · English requirement: IELTS 6.0 (Academic) / TOEFL 80, or a medium-of-instruction certificate · Deadline: June 1, 2027 · Application fee: ¥400

Supported by the Li Ka Shing Foundation, Shantou University offers a five-year English-taught Clinical Medicine degree (a six-year option is also available), with dorms from ¥3,000–¥6,000/year. Details on the Shantou University page.

Important for South Africans: Before enrolling in any medical program abroad, verify with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) how a Chinese medical degree fits into South African registration and internship requirements. Our MBBS eligibility guide covers standard entry criteria, and our MBBS in China overview compares all three programs in depth.
