Study in China for Sri Lankan Students: Tuition, Programs & Scholarships in the Greater Bay Area

Updated September 2026 · 7 min read · StudyinGBA

For Sri Lankan students, China offers something rare: internationally oriented degree programs at local prices. While studying medicine or engineering in the UK, Australia or even some South Asian private institutions can cost the equivalent of millions of rupees per year, universities in China's Greater Bay Area (GBA) — Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and their neighbouring cities — offer English-taught degrees starting from around ¥26,000 per year (roughly LKR 1.1 million).

Every tuition figure in this guide comes directly from the universities' official international-student fee schedules, so you can plan your budget with confidence.

Why the GBA Works for Sri Lankan Students

  • Low tuition, real English instruction. Full English-medium degrees in medicine, business, computer science and engineering — no Chinese language prerequisite for admission.
  • Strong return on investment. Four years of tuition at many GBA universities costs less than one year at a Western university.
  • A booming regional economy. Guangdong is China's export and technology hub — ideal for internships in trade, logistics, IT and manufacturing, sectors where Sri Lanka has deep commercial ties.
  • Good connectivity. Frequent and affordable flights link Colombo with Guangzhou in around 5–6 hours.

English-Taught MBBS: The Most Popular Choice

Medicine remains the top ambition for many Sri Lankan applicants who narrowly miss local state-university admission. Three Guangdong universities offer English-medium Clinical Medicine (MBBS):

University Duration Tuition / year English requirement Application fee
Jinan University (Guangzhou, QS #540) 6 years ¥34,000 IELTS 5.5 / TOEFL 80 ¥800
Guangzhou Medical University 6 years ¥40,000 IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL 80 ¥500
Shantou University 5 or 6 years ¥40,000 IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL 80 / MOI certificate ¥400

Key deadlines: Jinan University's Phase 2 deadline for the 2027 intake is May 31, 2027; Shantou University closes on June 1, 2027; Guangzhou Medical University's cycle closes June 30, 2026 for the current intake, so check the next round early.

Licensing note for Sri Lankans: If you intend to return home to practise, verify current recognition and internship requirements with the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) before enrolling. Planning this early avoids surprises after graduation.

Engineering, IT and Business Degrees in English

The GBA's industrial strength makes it especially attractive for technical and commercial degrees:

  • South China University of Technology (QS #377): English-taught bachelor's programs from ¥26,000/yr, plus English-taught master's in engineering at ¥34,000/yr. IELTS 5.5 for bachelor's entry; application fee ¥450; deadline June 30, 2027.
  • Jinan University: Computer Science (¥30,000/yr), Finance (¥28,000/yr), Accounting with CPA Canada (¥32,000/yr), International Economics & Trade (¥28,000/yr) — all English-taught.
  • Shenzhen University (QS #452): International Economics & Trade (¥26,000/yr) and International Business Administration (¥30,000/yr) in English, in China's tech capital.

For a lower-cost route, Chinese-taught engineering at Guangdong University of Technology costs ¥21,000/yr, and Guangzhou University offers degrees from ¥18,000/yr with no application fee. Many students complete a Chinese language year first — see our guide on where to learn Mandarin in China.

Scholarships Available to Sri Lankan Students

  • CSC Chinese Government Scholarships — full or partial funding at nearly every GBA university.
  • Guangdong Government Scholarship — around ¥10,000, offered province-wide, including at Jinan University.
  • University-level awards — Presidential Scholarships at SYSU, SZU and SCUT; Li Ka Shing Foundation support at Shantou University; HITSZ entrance scholarships covering up to 100% of tuition plus a monthly stipend.

Entry Requirements for Sri Lankan Applicants

  • A-Levels (London or Cambridge) or Local A-Levels with passes in relevant subjects — Biology, Chemistry and Physics for medicine; Mathematics for engineering and IT.
  • English proficiency: IELTS 5.5–6.0 or TOEFL 80 for most English-taught programs; Shantou University also accepts a medium-of-instruction certificate.
  • Student visa (X1): issued after admission; see our X1 vs X2 visa guide.

Cost of Living

Plan for ¥2,500–4,000 per month covering accommodation, meals and transport in Guangzhou or Shenzhen. University dorms generally run ¥3,500–8,000 per year. Smaller cities like Shantou, Foshan or Jiangmen are cheaper still — meaning a full year of study plus living can cost less than LKR 3 million in total at the most affordable universities.
