Study in China for Thai Students: Universities, Tuition & Scholarships (2027 Intake)

Updated September 2026 · 7 min read · StudyinGBA

For Thai students, China is one of the most convenient and affordable study destinations in Asia. A direct flight from Bangkok to Guangzhou takes under three hours, tuition is a fraction of what Western universities charge, and China's Greater Bay Area (GBA) — spanning Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau — hosts some of Asia's fastest-growing economies and best-connected universities.

This guide walks through the most popular study routes for Thai students: English-taught medicine, business and computer science degrees, Chinese language programs, and postgraduate engineering — with real tuition figures, English requirements, and application deadlines.

Good to know: Thai students do not need to speak Chinese for many programs. Several GBA universities offer full bachelor's and master's degrees taught entirely in English, and Chinese language programs are available for beginners.

Why Thai Students Choose the Greater Bay Area

  • Proximity: Direct flights from Bangkok and Phuket to Guangzhou and Shenzhen take about 2.5–3 hours, making visits home easy and inexpensive.
  • Affordability: Tuition starts from around ¥18,000–¥40,000 (roughly THB 85,000–200,000) per year, and on-campus dorms often cost under ¥3,000 per year.
  • Career relevance: China is Thailand's largest trading partner, and Chinese-language skills plus a Chinese degree are highly valued by Thai employers in trade, tourism, and manufacturing.
  • Scholarships: Chinese Government (CSC) and Guangdong Provincial Government scholarships can significantly reduce or fully cover costs.

English-Taught MBBS: The Most Popular Route

Medicine is the number one choice for Thai students going abroad. Three universities in the GBA offer English-taught clinical medicine (MBBS) degrees at internationally competitive prices:

1. Jinan University — Guangzhou

Tuition: ¥34,000/year · Duration: 6 years · English requirement: IELTS 5.5 (5.0+) / TOEFL 80 / SAT 1030 · Deadline: May 31, 2027 (Phase 2) · Application fee: ¥800

Jinan University is known as the "university of overseas Chinese" and has one of the largest international student communities in China. Its English-taught Clinical Medicine program runs six years including internship. See the Jinan University page.

2. Guangzhou Medical University — Guangzhou

Tuition: ¥40,000/year · Duration: 6 years · English requirement: IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL 80 · Deadline: June 30, 2026 · Application fee: ¥500

A medical specialist university with affiliated hospitals across Guangzhou, GMU offers a dedicated English-taught MBBS track and very low dormitory costs (around ¥1,500/year). Visit the Guangzhou Medical University page.

3. Shantou University — Shantou

Tuition: ¥40,000/year · Duration: 5 or 6 years · English requirement: IELTS 6.0 (Academic) / TOEFL 80, or a medium-of-instruction certificate · Deadline: June 1, 2027 · Application fee: ¥400

Supported by the Li Ka Shing Foundation, Shantou University's Medical College offers a five-year English-taught Clinical Medicine degree (six-year option also available), with dorms from ¥3,000–¥6,000/year. Details on the Shantou University page.

Important: Before enrolling in any overseas medical program, Thai students should confirm with the Medical Council of Thailand how a foreign medical degree fits into Thailand's licensing pathway. Plan early — our MBBS eligibility guide covers the standard entry requirements (high school science subjects, minimum grades, and age limits).
