Hong Kong: IELTS 6.0 – 6.5 is the Standard

Most Hong Kong universities ask for IELTS 6.0 to 6.5. HKU and HKUST generally require IELTS 6.5, with HKUST also specifying no sub-score below 5.5. Bilingual programs may accept either IELTS/TOEFL or HSK, depending on the language of instruction.

Mainland GBA: English-Taught Programs Need IELTS 5.5 – 6.5

On the mainland, English-taught programs are the main route for students without Chinese. Top research universities such as Sun Yat-sen University, SCUT, and HIT-SZ typically ask for IELTS 6.0 or 6.5. Jinan University and Shantou University commonly accept IELTS 5.5 for English-taught MBBS and bachelor programs. If you choose a Chinese-taught program, you generally need HSK 4 or 5 instead of IELTS.

Can You Study in the GBA Without IELTS?

Yes — in several situations:

• English-medium high school graduates can sometimes submit a school letter instead of IELTS for Macau and some mainland universities.
• Alternative tests such as TOEFL, SAT EBRW, or Duolingo are accepted by some Hong Kong and Macau institutions.
• Foundation / pre-university programs may admit students with lower English scores and upgrade them before degree entry.

Tips for Meeting the IELTS Requirement

• Check sub-score rules. A 6.5 overall with one band at 5.0 can still be rejected if the program requires 6.0 in every skill.
