Study in Huizhou, China: Costs, Universities & Guide for International Students

Updated October 2026 · 6 min read · StudyinGBA

When international students think about Guangdong Province, the names that come to mind are usually Guangzhou and Shenzhen. But tucked on the coast between those two megacities sits Huizhou (惠州) — a quieter, greener, and dramatically cheaper Greater Bay Area city that is now opening its doors to international students.

Huizhou is home to electronics giants like TCL and Desay, a scenic lakeside old town, and some of the best beaches in southern China at Xunliao and Yangmeikeng. For students who want an authentic Chinese university experience at one of the lowest tuition levels in the entire Greater Bay Area — without giving up access to big-city opportunities — Huizhou deserves a serious look.

Why Huizhou? It is one of the very few GBA cities where a full four-year bachelor's degree costs ¥5,050–¥5,710 per year — less than many students spend on rent in Shenzhen for a single year.

Huizhou University: The City's Main Destination for International Students

The primary host institution is Huizhou University (惠州学院), a comprehensive public university located on Yanda Avenue in the heart of the city. Its signature disciplines include electronics, chemistry, and tourism — all closely tied to Huizhou's real economy.

Programs and Tuition for International Students

ProgramLevel & LanguageDurationTuition / Year
ElectronicsBachelor, Chinese-taught4 years¥5,710
Chinese LanguageBachelor, Chinese-taught4 years¥5,050

Both programs require HSK 4 (180+) for direct entry, and applications for recent intakes have closed around June 30 each year — so for a fall 2027 start, plan to submit materials in the first half of 2027. See our guide to HSK requirements at Chinese universities for preparation tips.

Electronics students benefit from Huizhou's position as one of China's most important electronics manufacturing bases. Internships with TCL, Desay SV, and hundreds of component suppliers are a realistic part of the four-year study plan, and graduates who speak Chinese plus engineering are highly employable in the GBA's hardware industry.

What Does It Cost to Live in Huizhou?

  • Accommodation: on-campus dormitories are inexpensive by GBA standards, typically a few thousand yuan per year; off-campus apartments in Huizhou cost a fraction of Shenzhen or Guangzhou rents.
  • Food: canteen meals from ¥10–15; Huizhou's Cantonese-Hakka food culture is famous and affordable.
  • Transport: high-speed rail connects Huizhou to Shenzhen in roughly 30 minutes and to Guangzhou in under an hour, so weekend trips to the big cities are easy and cheap.
  • Overall: a realistic student budget of around ¥2,000–3,000 per month covers a comfortable lifestyle — noticeably lower than in Shenzhen or Guangzhou.

Combine that with tuition from ¥5,050 per year, and a full year of study in Huizhou can cost less than a single semester's tuition at a Hong Kong university (where bachelor's programs start around HK$145,000 per year — see our Study in Hong Kong guide for comparison).

Honest Considerations: Who Huizhou Is (and Isn't) For

Choose Huizhou if you want:

  • The lowest possible tuition in a major Chinese city — degree programs from ¥5,050/year.
  • A relaxed coastal lifestyle with beaches, mountains, and lakes on your doorstep.
  • Full Chinese-language immersion — international students are still rare here, so you will use Mandarin every day.
  • Proximity to Shenzhen's tech job market while paying small-city living costs.

Think twice if you need:

  • English-taught degrees. Huizhou University's current international programs are Chinese-taught only. If you don't yet have HSK 4, consider a Chinese language program with visa support first, or look at English-taught options in Shenzhen, where SUSTech offers English-taught bachelor's programs from ¥10,000–30,000 per year.
  • A large international community. The international student population is small. That is exactly what some students want — but it is a trade-off worth knowing in advance.
  • Brand-name universities. Huizhou University is a solid regional institution, not a QS-ranked research giant.

Tip: Many students pair a cheap Chinese-taught degree in Huizhou with internships and job hunting in Shenzhen, just 30 minutes away by high-speed rail. Small-city costs + big-city career access is a combination few study destinations can match.

How to Apply to Huizhou University

  1. Prepare your Chinese. HSK 4 (180+) is required for both current programs. Foundation and language-year options in Guangzhou or Shenzhen can bridge the gap — see our foundation program guide.
  2. Gather documents: high school transcripts, graduation certificate, passport copy, HSK certificate, and a health check.
  3. Submit before the deadline. Recent intakes closed on June 30; the 2027 window is expected to follow a similar schedule.
  4. Get your X1 visa after receiving the admission notice and JW202 form — our X1 vs X2 visa explainer walks through the process.
