Total Cost of a Bachelor's Degree in the GBA (2027): The Full 4-Year Price Table

Updated October 2026 · 9 min read · StudyinGBA

Tuition per year is the number every university publishes. It is also the number that misleads the most international families. A four-year bachelor's degree and a six-year medicine degree can quote the same annual fee and still differ by hundreds of thousands of renminbi in total spend — and a university with a low yearly fee can end up costing more than a "premium" school once duration and housing are included.

This guide fixes that. Using verified 2027 data for 33 universities across mainland China's Greater Bay Area (GBA), Hong Kong and Macau, we calculated the whole-program cost of a bachelor's degree: annual tuition multiplied by actual years of study, plus on-campus housing for every year.

One number to remember first: the cheapest full bachelor's degree in the GBA costs about ¥26,200 (about US$3,700) for the entire four years, tuition and dorm included. The most expensive costs HK$965,160 (about US$124,000). Same region, same degree level.

Why per-year tuition is a bad comparison tool

Three variables decide your real bill, and the university websites present them separately:

  • Duration. Most GBA bachelor's degrees run four years, but Chinese medicine and clinical medicine run five, English-taught medicine runs six, and the Education University of Hong Kong's bachelor of education runs five years. Stretching a program by two years can double the total even if the yearly fee looks modest.
  • Housing. On-campus dorms in mainland GBA universities cost roughly ¥1,200–6,000 per year. In Hong Kong they cost HK$11,500–17,290 per year, and in Macau MOP 18,000–25,000. Housing is 5–30% of the total, not a rounding error.
  • Program tier. At the same university, a liberal arts degree can cost half of a medicine degree. Sun Yat-sen University, for example, ranges from ¥26,000 to ¥48,000 per year depending on the faculty.

The formula we used: total cost = (annual tuition × years of study) + (annual dorm fee × years of study). Application fees, visa costs, flights, insurance and living expenses are excluded and covered separately below.

Under ¥45,000: the budget tier

Huizhou, Zhaoqing, Foshan and Guangdong Pharmaceutical all finish under ¥31,000 total — with SUSTech's English-taught science degree landing at ¥44,800 if you are awarded the lower band of its tuition range.

¥60,000–90,000: the provincial and Guangzhou mid-tier

Zhongkai, Wuyi, Dongguan, SCNU, Guangzhou University, GDUT, SCUT and GDUFS cluster here. This is where most self-funded applicants end up: solid regional universities, four-year totals under ¥90,000.

¥100,000–454,000: the flagships and the English-taught premium

Shantou, SZU and SYSU sit at the top of the Chinese-taught market. BNBU, at ¥110,000 per year, is a different product entirely: an English-taught joint-venture campus in Zhuhai with a four-year total of ¥454,000.

Macau: four universities, one clear range

Macao Polytechnic UniversityPortuguese (bilingual)MOP 60,000MOP 18,000MOP 312,000

Macau University of Science and TechnologyBusiness AdministrationMOP 95,000MOP 24,000MOP 476,000

Macau sits in a useful middle position: about 10× the cheapest mainland option and roughly half of the cheapest Hong Kong degree. The University of Macau is the city's highest-ranked campus (QS #285) and, MPU aside, the lowest-priced of Macau's four main universities. Note that MPU's cheapest program is bilingual Portuguese — genuinely attractive if you want a European-language credential, but it narrows your options if you do not.

Hong Kong: HK$634,000 to HK$965,160

Two traps in the Hong Kong column

HKU's STEM programs cost HK$249,000 per year, not HK$224,000 — a science degree there totals over HK$1.06 million. And EdUHK's five-year education degree ends up more expensive than PolyU's four-year degree despite a lower annual fee: a textbook case of why annual figures mislead.

The five- and six-year exceptions

Medicine and Chinese medicine break the four-year assumption, and they do it in opposite directions:

  • Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine — Chinese Medicine, 5 years at ¥20,000/yr = ¥100,000 tuition, plus ¥7,500 dorm = ¥107,500. Remarkably, a five-year clinical degree here costs less than four years of liberal arts at Sun Yat-sen University.
  • Guangzhou Medical University — Clinical Medicine (English-taught), 6 years at ¥40,000/yr = ¥240,000 tuition, plus ¥9,000 dorm = ¥249,000. Still under a quarter of the cheapest Hong Kong degree.

If medicine is the goal, our MBBS and medicine guide covers licensing, internship structure and eligibility in more depth.

What the total does not include

Budget these separately — they add 8–15% in mainland China and less in proportional terms in Hong Kong and Macau:

  • Application fees: ¥400–800 at mainland universities, HK$200–600 in Hong Kong. See our application fee comparison.
  • Living costs: roughly ¥1,500–2,500 per month in Guangzhou or Shenzhen for a student who cooks sometimes and eats on campus.
  • Visa and residence permit: the X1 visa, physical examination and residence permit process is a one-off cost in the first year.
  • Flights and insurance: annual, and highly dependent on your home country.
  • Deposits: Shantou University charges a ¥800 dorm deposit on top of its ¥6,000 annual fee.

How to cut the total by 30–100%

  • Apply for the CSC or Guangdong Provincial Scholarship before you compare prices. A full CSC award removes tuition and housing entirely, which flips the ranking: a scholarship at a ¥78,000 school beats a self-funded seat at a ¥26,200 school. Our GBA scholarship guide lists which universities actually fund international undergraduates.
  • Compare language of instruction, not assume it. English-taught is not automatically pricier (SUSTech at ¥10,000–30,000) or automatically cheaper (BNBU at ¥110,000). Check the specific program.
  • Say yes to the dorm. Off-campus rent in Shenzhen or Guangzhou can be ¥2,000–4,000 per month; a ¥1,200–1,500 dorm bed is the single best-value line item in the whole budget.
  • Do not overlook the four cheapest cities. Huizhou, Zhaoqing, Foshan and Jiangmen all deliver four-year degrees under ¥70,000 total. Our cheapest GBA cities ranking compares them city by city.

Bottom line

A bachelor's degree in the GBA can cost ¥26,200 or HK$965,160, and the difference is only partly about prestige — duration, faculty tier and city housing policy explain most of it. Work out the four-year total before you fall in love with a campus, then apply for funding.
